Cemani mean “thoroughly black” to the bone
The Ayam Cemani Chicken is a rarepure bred all black chicken imported from Indonesia into Europe and
the US in the 90’s. The Ayam Cemani originated on the island of Java. They are commonly referred to
the rarest chicken. They have become a favorite for breeders and poultry owners.
They have a dominate gene that causes hyperpigmentation causing them to be all black including
combs, tongue, skin, feathers, meat, organs and bones. Their blood in colored but dark. The excess
pigmentation called fibro melanosis is a genetic condition causing the black color. Another breed with
this condition is the silkie.
They have more muscle compared to other breeds which makes them quit fast. Their feathers should
tightly packed and in the sunlight show green or purple iridescence color.
Roosters typically weight 4.4 to 6.5 lbs and the Hens range from 3.5 to 4.5 lbs
